As you may probably already know, caffeine is known to increase our energy and to increase our alertness. Since energy drinks contain caffeine, they stimulate us when we lack energy. Nonetheless, despite their ability to do this, they can be negative four our health because of their ingredients and its effect on our hearts.
Why Are Energy Drinks Not Good for You?
Studies point out that there is a strong link between the regular consumption of energy drinks and heart attacks. Unfortunately, Cory Terry, a 33-year old Brooklyn resident who used to drink Red Bull every day died as a result of a sudden heart attack. According to his mother’s claims, Cory never drank or smoked and was physically active. His only problem was the habit of drinking Red Bull daily.
The Association between Heart Attacks and Energy Drinks
According to a study done by Mayo Clinic, energy drinks can worsen the cardiovascular health and lead to a heart attack. Namely, the study was done with 15 healthy individuals who drank half a liter of an unidentified energy drink every day. The end results indicated that the participants experienced an increase in their blood pressure levels by 10 percent in 4 hours. They also had an increased heart rate, which is known to elevate the risk of heart attacks.
The Ingredients in Energy Drinks
Besides caffeine and sugar, energy drinks contain taurine, a powerful stimulant. However, due to the lack of scientific research regarding the ingredients in Red Bull, the negativity of their effects remains unproven.
Even though the taurine and caffeine are not dangerous on their own, when mixed together, they can cause huge damages on the cardiovascular system and lead to heart attacks. All in all, until more is known about the ingredients in energy drinks such as Red Bull, make sure you avoid them. If you are in need of a stimulant, a far safer and healthier option is a cup of good quality coffee.
