Do you remember your grandparents complaining about having any type of food allergy? Me neither. It’s a funny thing, to think about how just a few decades ago people basically had no concept of food allergies, and nowadays it seems like every person is either lactose intolerant, or sensitive to gluten, or has some third, less trendy, food allergy.
What is it exactly that made our grandparents resilient to food allergies?
- They didn’t go on diets
Our grandparents were not a part of a generation obsessed with diets and constricting their intake of food, as we are. They ate what their body craved, how much it needed, and when it needed. They weren’t exposed to as many commercials for dietary products, and there was no social pressure or a norm for a specific “ideal” body as there is today.
- They consumed what was in season
Even 30 years ago, the food that people consume was mostly fresh, picked the same day, or possibly the day before it was prepared and consumed. It was produced on local farms, and even people living in cities were able to buy fresh produce in small markets that farmers sold their goods on. There were almost no re-sellers and those looking to earn a quick buck by selling vegetables made to grow quick, not tasty or healthy.
- They spent a ton of time outside
Spending time in open air is one of the best ways to relax and possibly get some exercise. Admittedly, millennials are getting hiking and similar activities back on the radar, but not in the same manner our grandparents did. They spent most of their time working outside, then spent their free time riding bikes, or just hanging out with friends. Those days are mostly over now, as most of us would rather spend our time on the computer.
- They ate homemade mills
Traditionally prepared meal, made from scratch can cost you less, and it will be immeasurably more healthy than any store-bought stuff or a meal in a restaurant. Just ask your grandma.
- They consumed more minerals
When it comes to meat consumption, our parents took the most of any animal. They didn’t just consume a single stake, they would use an entire cow: even the bones. This might be the key factor in vitality of the older generation, as broths and soups made with animal bones which are packed with bone marrow are extremely healthy.
- They didn’t take prescription meds
Basically, their entire medical protection and healing process was based on their diet. They took enough minerals and vitamins to stay healthy, even without realizing it. Therefore, they needed doctors just in extreme circumstances, and they avoided consuming meds like a plague.
You might be wondering why does this all have to do with food allergies?
It is a fact that every cell in our body gets affected by what we eat and how we live. The amount of physical activity, or inactivity, in combination with our diet affects our entire body, and when both of these factor are inadequate our overall health diminishes, and our sensitivity to different foods increases.
